AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT
THESE RULES:
These rules are meant to act as a set of guidelines for developing
safety and performance rules for individual tracks and groups.
The GRASSPASS National Championship will require competitors to
conform to a set of rules similar to these rules. It is the responsibility
of each track owner/organizer to implement competition rules as
they see fit.
READ OUR TERMS OF USE

Safety Equipment
- Helmets
- Closed
face helmets with eye shields must be worn at all times.
- Helmets
MUST be buckled at all times.
- Long
Hair must be tucked in at all times
- Clothing
- Shirts
are required at all times
- Footwear
- Closed
toe shoes must be worn at all times
- Kart
Safety Equipment
- Suspension
- All
suspension mounting points must be safe and rigidly mounted.
- No
moving suspension is allowed at any time
- Bumpers
- Front
- FULL
WIDTH Front bumpers are required at all times. The bumper
must extend outward to the outside edge of the front
tires.
- Front
bumpers may not drag on the track or hang dangerously.
- Front
Bumpers must not have sharp edges or edges that would
get caught in competitors karts.
- CIK
style plastic or fiberglass front bumpers are suggested
and must be mounted in such a way as to prevent tire
to tire contact.
- Rear
- Rear
bumpers are required at all times.
- Rear
bumpers may not drag on the track or hang dangerously.
- Rear
Bumpers must not have sharp edges or edges that would
get caught in competitors karts.
- Rear
bumpers MUST extend to at least to the center line of
each rear tire.
- Nerf-Bars
- Nerf
bars are required on both sides of the kart at all times.
- Nerf
bars may not drag on the ground at any time.
- Nerf
bars must be secured to the kart in a safe manner.
- Nerf
bars must not have any sharp or dangerous edges.
- The
trailing edge of both nerf bars or side pods MUST be outboard
of the outside edge of the rear tires on both sides of
the kart.
- Ballast
- Ballast
may be placed anywhere on a kart providing it is secured
in a safe manner.
- Ballast
must be mechanically secured to the kart, i.e. nuts and
bolts.
- Ballast
may be in an unbreakable container provided that container
is secured to the kart in a mechanical manner.
- Loose
or dangerous ballast WILL result in a Black Flag.
- Seats
- Seats
must be mounted to the kart in a safe manner.
- Seats
may not have sharp or exposed edges.
- Brakes
- BRAKES
MUST BE FULLY FUNCTIONAL AT ALL TIMES
- Karts
may not be on the track at ANY time without brakes.
- A
single rear disk is the only brake allowed on a kart,
no front brakes are allowed.
- Chain
& Clutch
- Belt,
Chain and clutch guards are required on all karts at all
times.
- Belt,
Chain and clutch guards must be safe and effective.
- Full
length chain guards are recommended.
- Engines
- Engines
must be safely mounted at all times.
- All
karts must be equipped with a stock, unmodified Honda
6.5 HP muffler.
- The
ONLY modification allowed to the stock 6.5hp muffler is
the removal of the spark arresting screen.
- Fuel
- No
fuels containing lead or other exotic compounds may be
used.
- Tires
- Tires
must be untreaded slicks.
- No
grooves may be stock or added to tires.
- No
traction devices such as studs or screws may be used.
- Tire
softening compounds are prohibited.
- Tire
size is open.
- Tires
must be pneumatic, no solid tires.
- On-Track
Safety
- Spirit
of the rules
- All
driving, be it in practice, qualifying or racing must
be performed in a SAFE manner. Any driver observed to
be driving in an unsafe manner WILL be stopped and reprimanded
or penalized as determined by the race director or track
owner.
- Passing
- At
all times, it is the responsibility of the OVERTAKING
driver to make a clean, safe and contact free pass.
- It
is the responsibility of the driver being OVERTAKEN to
drive a safe and consistent line on the track.
- Blocking,
swerving or other unsportsman like or dangerous driving
will result in the loss of driving privileges.
- GrassPass
National Honda Class Rules
- Series
Description
- The
GrassPass rules will be in effect for any GrassPass sanctioned
events.
- Kart
Preparation
- Numbers
- Numbers
must be displayed clearly on the front and both sides
of the kart at all times.
- Numbers
must be clear and legible.
- Numbers
must be no less than 5" in height and must contrast
with the background they are applied to.
- It
is in the interest of the competitors to have clear and
readable numbers to avoid timing and scoring errors.
- Transponder
(if available)
Transponders
must be purchased or rented from the organizer in order
to compete. It is your responsibility to properly mount
your transponder. All transponders must be returned to the
organizer at the end of each event unless other charging
arrangements are made.
- Kart
condition
- All
karts must meet the minimum safety requirements as laid
out in the safety rules.
- Tires
- Tires
must meet the requirements as laid out in the safety rules.
- Engines
- Honda
6.5HP engines are required (model GX200.)
- Honda
6.5HP engines with internal 2:1 gear reduction are permitted
Internal
workings of the Honda gear reduction may not be modified.
- NO
MODIFICATIONS MAY BE MADE TO ANY HONDA ENGINE OTHER THAN
THOSE LISTED BELOW.
- OEM
Governors may be overridden in any manner, providing
there in no likelihood of a stuck throttle.
- Air
filter element may be replaced by non-OEM filter but
must remain the same dimensions and in the same location
as the OEM filter. Plastic covers may not be removed.
- Low
Oil kill switch may be disconnected.
- 2
Throttle return springs MUST be ADDED.
- Engine
shutoff switch may be relocated.
- If
relocated, the shutoff switch must be placed in an
accessible location for driver and workers.
- Spark
plugs may be of a non-OEM brand.
- Exhaust
spark arrestor screen may be removed.
- ALL
OTHER MODIFICATIONS ARE EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN WITHOUTH
THE CONSENT OF THE ORGANIZERS.
- Parts
may be replaced on a Honda engine as long as those parts
being installed are manufactured by Honda for use on the
6.5HP engine and are UNMODIFIED.
- Clutch
and Gearing
- Gear
ratio is open.
- No
variable ratio belt drives or transmissions
- Chain,
sprockets and chain guards are open provided they meet
the safety requirements laid out in the safety section.
- Belt
drive is permitted provided it is a cog type and must
be a constant ratio.
- The
clutch is open.
- Fun
kart clutches are recommended.
- Axle
clutches are prohibited
- Wet
clutches are prohibited (excluding Honda gear reduction)
- Multiple
disk clutches are prohibited (excluding Honda gear reduction)
- Driver
must be protected from all spinning parts by a sturdy
guard.
- Fuel,
Oil and Lubricants
- Karts
may not leak any fluids onto the track or in the pits.
- Fuel
is restricted to 87-94 octane unleaded fuel.
- No
additives or other types of fuel may be mixed with the
fuel.
- Race
Procedure
- Qualifying
- When
qualifying is used before a race, the rules will be spelled
out in the Supplemental Regulations
- The
Grid
- All
competitor’s karts must be on the grid 5 minutes before
the official starting time of the race.
- Karts
that are not on the grid at the 5 minute to go point will
start from the back of the pack.
- Starting
- Unless
otherwise stated in the supplemental regulations, all
starts will be Rolling Starts
- Racing
- Race
lengths will be determined by the organizers. The actual
number of laps will vary from track to track.
- Racing
will remain safe and in accordance with all rules governing
on track behavior and procedure.
- Pit
Stops
- Pit
stops shall be performed in a safe and under control manner.
- When
entering and exiting the pit lane, extreme caution will
be used and speed will be kept to that of a person walking
briskly or below.
- Speeding
and unsafe pit procedure may result in a black flag or
other penalty.
- Refueling
mid-race is prohibited unless otherwise stated.
- Karts
returning to the track from the pit lane shall blend into
traffic safely
- The
Flags
- All
competitors are asked to learn and obey the flags during
ALL on track sessions. The flags are for safety and will
only be used when they are needed.
- Yellow
Fag
- CAUTION,
SLOW DOWN!! The yellow flag is shown to alert drivers
of a track blockage or unsafe situation. THERE IS
NO PASSING IN THE AREA LEADING UP OR AT A YELLOW FLAG.
- IGNORING
A YELLOW FLAG WILL MOST LIKELY RESULT IN A BLACK FLAG!!!
- Yellow
Flag at all stations
- If
a yellow flag is displayed at all flagging stations,
a full course caution will be in effect and cars will
slow to follow the car in front of them. NO PASSING
in allowed under a full course Caution.
- Karts
may enter the Pit Lane during a full course caution.
- Black
Flag
- STOP,
The black flag is used to end a session early, or
to signal to a single driver that he/she must report
to the pits. A black flag will be used at the discresion
of the race director.
- IGNORING
A BLACK FLAG WILL RESULT IN THE DRIVER BEING EJECTED
FROM THE RACETRACK AND ASKED NOT TO RETURN.
- Green
Flag
- GO,
Begin racing (safely). The green will be shown at
the beginning of a race and to begin racing after
a caution period.
- Race
Stoppage
- If
the race needs to be stopped for any reason, competitors
will be restarted in the running order of the last completed
lap.
- The
Race Director has the option to stop a race at any time
they see fit for the sake of safety or fair competition.
- Timing
& Scoring
- Point
keeping
- The
Organizers will maintain and publish the season point
totals for each team.
- Post-Race
Inspection
- Purpose
- Post
race inspection is to maintain the safety and integrity
of kart racing and is at the discretion of the organizer
- Procedure
- All
competitors are asked to cooperate and comply with all
requests made of them during the post race inspection
period.
- Inspection
will immediately follow selected event. Competitors are
expressly forbidden from modifying, altering, to add to
or remove anything from their karts between the end of
the race and the post race inspection.
- Kart
Safety Inspection
- The
condition of all required safety equipment will be checked
to be in compliance with the Safety rules.
- The
brakes of each kart shall be tested after each race.
- A
kart will be determined to have brakes if and only if
it is able to stop the rear axle from turning with a
passenger in the seat while being pushed on the track
surface by another kart.
- The
race director will have the final say in all brake related
rule infractions.
- Infractions
- The
Race Director will have final say in all penalties resulting
from post race technical inspection.
- The
Organizers give express permission to the Race Director
to exclude a competitor from the official results for
a post race inspection violation.
- Spirit
of Competition
- Rules
Enforcement
- The
rules are meant to protect the competitors as well as the
promoters and the hosts.
- There
will be absolutely no leniency shown to those who disregard
these rules and act in an unsafe, unhealthy or inconsiderate
way.
- Rule
Changes
- All
rules may be appealed and all competitors have the opportunity
to request a review or clarification to any rule.
- If
a competitor has a question about the legality of a part,
modification, procedure or action, the Organizers will respond
to that question in a timely manner and notify all competitors
in the supplemental regulations of the next event.
